In the past few years, since it operates within the system, “Salford” invested over 25 million euros in primary production, receipt control of raw milk (own farms), modern technology, refrigeration, transportation of final products. In an effort to keep pace with contemporary trends prevailing in the food industry of economically most developed countries of Europe, Mlekara has during the past few years worked on the introduction international standards.

ISO 9001:2000

Through the successful implementation of and certification to the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System in 2003, Mlekara Subotica has stepped into a completely new world of operations, where consumer and customer satisfaction, and indirectly, the satisfaction of others involved in milk production and processing, is defined as an ultimate goal. The application scope of ISO 9001:2000 Standards covers all activity areas of Mlekara.

The HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) food safety management system was introduced in 2005, thus Mlekara Subotica became the first among the dairy factory’s in Serbia which was positively assessed during the certification process by the international certification body OQS from Austria. Under this international standard the risks and critical control points are analyzed in all processes having influence on the quality of products and food safety.

British Retail Consortium

Modern EU markets rely on large retail chains, which do not wish to take the risk of selling food products without guaranteed health safety. In order to protect key accounts, higher standards were set for food and these are to be observed by food producers, if they wish to supply large retail chains. One of these highly demanding standards is BRC (British Retail Consortium), which was introduced by Mlekara in 2006 for the production and packaging of FDPs.

Halal certificate is a requirement to all producers who wish to sell their products on the markets of the Islamic states, or to consumers from the Islamic communities living in other countries. It is recommended that companies applying for HALAL certification are already certified to ISO and HACCP, however it is not the only condition for obtaining HALAL certification. If conditions are met, the Agency issues the HALAL certificate thus permitting production and export to Arabic countries. The certificate is issued for a period of one year. In order to fulfill the requirements of the Islam religion, HALAL certified products mustn't contain additives and emulsifiers harmful for health. Also, they mustn’t contain any impurity originating from hog, and emulsifier E120 used for color production and obtained from insects, is also forbidden. Likewise, alcohol, the use of liquors in candy products and all additives used for stiffening the product and are originating from hog, are forbidden. Practically, it means that the dairy mustn’t disinfect the plant with means containing alcohol, and huge attention should be devoted to additives in the production.

Mlekara has certified to IFS V5 2011.

Food security still remains the topic of discussion on the global level. In response to the growing needs for safe food, German and French traders association have created a uniform standard for saving time and money. It is the international food standard –IFS which is the standard for quality and food safety, developed to verify the competence of the producers of food safety and its quality. The main objective of this standard is to include a variety of requirements that traders are under. IFS was developed for all types of organizations.

Standards should improve food safety and product quality, increase safety and confidence of consumers and improve cost efficiency in food productions. It is used in all major retail store chains such as: Metro, Lidl, Audi, Carrefour etc. The introduction of IFS for our producers is more important because the retail chain “Metro” announced that by 2012 this standard will be required for all its suppliers. 40 of our companies are producing for this brand, but only few of them in Serbia have IFS.
